Last September, we saw another use for a<br \/>\ntemporary shelter. As part of a larger political statement, tents<br \/>\noccupied <i>Zucotti<br \/>\nPark<\/i><br \/>\nin the financial district of Manhattan, to shelter protesters,<br \/>\nreclaim common space and take action towards a larger social<br \/>\nmovement.\u2028\u2028Matters<br \/>\nwoven into this piece refer to the intersecting and overlapping<br \/>\nstories of the Social uprising currently happening throughout Quebec,<br \/>\nas well as to the Occupy movement occurring Internationally.<i><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/2012\/04\/process-how-we-gather-part-i-processus.html\">How We Gather<\/a> <\/i>is<br \/>\na gesture of solidarity to these movements by looking at the ways and<br \/>\nreasons we gather in public space. This new work physically occupies an<br \/>\nindustrial wasteland-now-meadow, preserved from development by the<br \/>\ncommunity. It looks at the interconnected nature of social and living<br \/>\nsystems. It encourages forms of protest that are local, creative,<br \/>\ntangible &#8211; in places that are dear to us.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\nThe non-profit citizen\u2019s<br \/>\ngroup,&nbsp;<i><a href=\"http:\/\/amisduchamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Les Amis du Champ des Possibles<\/a><\/i><br \/>\nis still negotiating with the city about the future of this valuable<br \/>\nspace as a potential biodiversity reserve and wild commons. <i><a href=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/2012\/04\/process-how-we-gather-part-i-processus.html\">How We Gather<\/a><\/i><br \/>\nechoes a common voice demanding participatory democracy.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\nThis<br \/>\ntapestry &#8211; before it was installed as a tent &#8211; progressed through two<br \/>\nphases of germination, life, death. Over the 50 days of the<br \/>\ntapestry\u2019s silent growth and drying, my actions have embodied a<br \/>\nresponsibility to care for life. The sprouts require daily attention<br \/>\nand represent a living movement. This tapestry is composed of over<br \/>\n50,000 seeds. Like people gathering, thousands upon thousands occupy<br \/>\nspace with their physical presence and rely on one another for<br \/>\nwarmth, wellness, growth, empowerment. Certains abris sont temporaires et con\u00e7us<br \/>\npour les d\u00e9placements; d\u2019autres sont faits pour durer longtemps.<br \/>\nEn septembre 2011, nous avons d\u00e9couvert qu\u2019un abri pouvait avoir<br \/>\nune autre fonction&nbsp;: celle de r\u00e9sister. \u00c9rig\u00e9es dans la<br \/>\nfoul\u00e9e du mouvement d\u2019occupation international, dans le quartier<br \/>\ndes finances de Manhattan, les tentes du parc <i>Zucotti,<br \/>\n<\/i>qui<br \/>\nont abrit\u00e9 les protestataires, repr\u00e9sentaient aussi la<br \/>\nrevendication d\u2019un espace commun et s\u2019inscrivait dans une plus<br \/>\ngrande mouvance sociale.<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\nLes<br \/>\nmat\u00e9riaux de <i><a href=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/2012\/04\/process-how-we-gather-part-i-processus.html\">Comment on se rassemble<\/a> <\/i>font<br \/>\n\u00e9cho aux diff\u00e9rents r\u00e9cits qui ont scand\u00e9 la prise de parole et<br \/>\nde conscience sociale qui a surgi ce printemps au Qu\u00e9bec ainsi qu\u2019au<br \/>\nmouvement d\u2019occupation et \u00e0 son ampleur internationale. Par le<br \/>\nregard qu\u2019elle pose sur les fa\u00e7ons dont nous occupons la place<br \/>\npublique et les raisons qui nous y poussent, l\u2019\u0153uvre <i><a href=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/2012\/04\/process-how-we-gather-part-i-processus.html\">Comment on se rassemble<\/a>&nbsp;<\/i>est<br \/>\nsolidaire de ces mouvements. Elle occupe un espace industriel<br \/>\nabandonn\u00e9 et transform\u00e9, aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 l\u2019abri des d\u00e9veloppeurs<br \/>\ngr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un mouvement communautaire. Elle est n\u00e9e d\u2019une r\u00e9flexion<br \/>\nsur la nature des liens qui unissent les dimensions sociales et<br \/>\nhumaines. Sa r\u00e9alisation encourage toute protestation locale,<br \/>\ncr\u00e9ative et r\u00e9elle d\u2019espaces de vie auxquels nous tenons.<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\nLe<br \/>\ngroupe citoyen \u00e0 but non lucratif&nbsp;<i><a href=\"http:\/\/amisduchamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Les Amis du Champ des Possibles<\/a> <\/i>est<br \/>\ntoujours en n\u00e9gociations avec la Ville au sujet de l\u2019avenir<br \/>\nr\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00e0 ce champ qui poss\u00e8de un potentiel pour pr\u00e9server la<br \/>\nbiodiversit\u00e9 et un espace sauvage. <i><a href=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/2012\/04\/process-how-we-gather-part-i-processus.html\">Comment on se rassemble<\/a><\/i><i>&nbsp;<\/i>se<br \/>\nfait l\u2019\u00e9cho de la voix commune de ce groupe revendiquant une<br \/>\nd\u00e9mocratie r\u00e9ellement participative.<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\" style=\"font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\nAvant<br \/>\nd\u2019\u00eatre un abri, cette tapisserie a suivi deux \u00e9tapes de<br \/>\ngermination, pris vie puis pour enfin mourrir. Au cours des 50<br \/>\nsilencieux jours de croissance, j\u2019ai assum\u00e9 la responsabilit\u00e9 de<br \/>\nlui donner vie et de m\u2019en occuper. Les germes demandent une&nbsp;attention<br \/>\nquotidienne, car ils deviennent des organismes vivants. Plus de 50<br \/>\n000 graines ont \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaires pour la r\u00e9alisation de cette<br \/>\ntapisserie. Un peu comme les gens qui se rassemblent, ces milliers de<br \/>\npousses ont occup\u00e9 l\u2019espace, puisant dans la chaleur,&nbsp;la<br \/>\npuissance, la croissance et la force des unes et des autres.
