\nIn
\nthe labour of engines and trades and the labour of fields I find the
\ndevelopments, <\/i>\u2028<\/div>\n
\nAnd
\nfind the eternal meanings.<\/i>\u2028<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nShelter
\nis one of our most basic needs, made for protection against exposure
\nto the elements, noise, threat of danger, as well as for privacy.
\nSome are temporary and designed to be carried around, whereas others
\nmay stand for years. Last September, we saw another use for a
\ntemporary shelter. As part of a larger political statement, tents
\noccupied Zucotti
\nPark<\/i>
\nin the financial district of Manhattan, to shelter protesters,
\nreclaim common space and take action towards a larger social
\nmovement.\u2028\u2028Matters
\nwoven into this piece refer to the intersecting and overlapping
\nstories of the Social uprising currently happening throughout Quebec,
\nas well as to the Occupy movement occurring Internationally.
\nHow We Gather<\/a> <\/i>is
\na gesture of solidarity to these movements by looking at the ways and
\nreasons we gather in public space. This new work physically occupies an
\nindustrial wasteland-now-meadow, preserved from development by the
\ncommunity. It looks at the interconnected nature of social and living
\nsystems. It encourages forms of protest that are local, creative,
\ntangible – in places that are dear to us. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe non-profit citizen\u2019s
\ngroup, Les Amis du Champ des Possibles<\/a><\/i>
\nis still negotiating with the city about the future of this valuable
\nspace as a potential biodiversity reserve and wild commons. How We Gather<\/a><\/i>
\nechoes a common voice demanding participatory democracy. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThis
\ntapestry – before it was installed as a tent – progressed through two
\nphases of germination, life, death. Over the 50 days of the
\ntapestry\u2019s silent growth and drying, my actions have embodied a
\nresponsibility to care for life. The sprouts require daily attention
\nand represent a living movement. This tapestry is composed of over
\n50,000 seeds. Like people gathering, thousands upon thousands occupy
\nspace with their physical presence and rely on one another for
\nwarmth, wellness, growth, empowerment. A shelter in the wind and sun,
\nleaves of grass dry, in quiet homage to the power of collectivity.\u2028\u2028<\/div>\n

\nabri r\u00e9pond \u00e0 nos besoins les plus \u00e9l\u00e9mentaires : il nous prot\u00e9ge
\ndes intemp\u00e9ries, des bruits, d\u2019\u00e9ventuels dangers et nous donne
\nune certain intimit\u00e9. Certains abris sont temporaires et con\u00e7us
\npour les d\u00e9placements; d\u2019autres sont faits pour durer longtemps.
\nEn septembre 2011, nous avons d\u00e9couvert qu\u2019un abri pouvait avoir
\nune autre fonction : celle de r\u00e9sister. \u00c9rig\u00e9es dans la
\nfoul\u00e9e du mouvement d\u2019occupation international, dans le quartier
\ndes finances de Manhattan, les tentes du parc Zucotti,
\n<\/i>qui
\nont abrit\u00e9 les protestataires, repr\u00e9sentaient aussi la
\nrevendication d\u2019un espace commun et s\u2019inscrivait dans une plus
\ngrande mouvance sociale.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nLes
\nmat\u00e9riaux de Comment on se rassemble<\/a> <\/i>font
\n\u00e9cho aux diff\u00e9rents r\u00e9cits qui ont scand\u00e9 la prise de parole et
\nde conscience sociale qui a surgi ce printemps au Qu\u00e9bec ainsi qu\u2019au
\nmouvement d\u2019occupation et \u00e0 son ampleur internationale. Par le
\nregard qu\u2019elle pose sur les fa\u00e7ons dont nous occupons la place
\npublique et les raisons qui nous y poussent, l\u2019\u0153uvre Comment on se rassemble<\/a> <\/i>est
\nsolidaire de ces mouvements. Elle occupe un espace industriel
\nabandonn\u00e9 et transform\u00e9, aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 l\u2019abri des d\u00e9veloppeurs
\ngr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un mouvement communautaire. Elle est n\u00e9e d\u2019une r\u00e9flexion
\nsur la nature des liens qui unissent les dimensions sociales et
\nhumaines. Sa r\u00e9alisation encourage toute protestation locale,
\ncr\u00e9ative et r\u00e9elle d\u2019espaces de vie auxquels nous tenons.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nLe
\ngroupe citoyen \u00e0 but non lucratif Les Amis du Champ des Possibles<\/a> <\/i>est
\ntoujours en n\u00e9gociations avec la Ville au sujet de l\u2019avenir
\nr\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00e0 ce champ qui poss\u00e8de un potentiel pour pr\u00e9server la
\nbiodiversit\u00e9 et un espace sauvage. Comment on se rassemble<\/a><\/i> <\/i>se
\nfait l\u2019\u00e9cho de la voix commune de ce groupe revendiquant une
\nd\u00e9mocratie r\u00e9ellement participative.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAvant
\nd\u2019\u00eatre un abri, cette tapisserie a suivi deux \u00e9tapes de
\ngermination, pris vie puis pour enfin mourrir. Au cours des 50
\nsilencieux jours de croissance, j\u2019ai assum\u00e9 la responsabilit\u00e9 de
\nlui donner vie et de m\u2019en occuper. Les germes demandent une attention
\nquotidienne, car ils deviennent des organismes vivants. Plus de 50
\n000 graines ont \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaires pour la r\u00e9alisation de cette
\ntapisserie. Un peu comme les gens qui se rassemblent, ces milliers de
\npousses ont occup\u00e9 l\u2019espace, puisant dans la chaleur, la
\npuissance, la croissance et la force des unes et des autres. Pousses
\ns\u00e9ch\u00e9es, abri du soleil et du vent, Comment on se rassemble<\/a> rend <\/i>en
\nhommage \u00e0 la force de la collectivit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
