Drawings that depict overlapping lines and nodes, done in ink wash, wax crayon, graphite and watercolour, are installed to correspond with objects cast from consumer packaging, demonstrating the scope of the artist’s creative process. The works are simultaneously organic and architectural, delicate and bold, and reveal Bourgeois’ sophisticated understanding of composition.

Bourgeois draws inspiration from roots, rhizomes and mycelial networks found in nature, intermingled with themes such as connectivity, multiplicity and cartography found in A Thousand Plateaus (1980), the collaborative philosophical text authored by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. This installation suggests a dialogue of resistance to hierarchal forms of organizing knowledge. The artist interweaves motifs used by artists in the Firestone Collection, including Arthur Lismer, A.Y. Jackson, Edmund Alleyn and Anne Savage, into horizontal, non-linear renderings representing networks, mass branching and ceaseless connections.

Gail Bourgeois holds an MFA from Concordia University, is a founding member of Powerhouse Gallery (La Centrale, Montréal), and has founded or formed part of a dozen artists’ collectives. She maintains a studio-based drawing practice where themes and methods of working express the tension between academic knowledge and more experimental forms of knowledge based on her interest in collective practices and community engagement.
