Still\u00a0basking in the glow of the talented humans whom I had the pleasure of working alongside, as artist in residence at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/starandsnake.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Star &amp; Snake<\/a>,\u00a0in Center Harbor, New Hampshire. For two weeks, I made art and was lodged in a reclaimed, turn of the century Catholic church \u2014 currently transforming into\u00a0an\u00a0inspirational space for retreats, events, and artist residencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The return\u00a0home left me disoriented, in slight withdrawal from the regenerative,\u00a0dream-like time\u00a0spent there. Those moments have nonetheless reaffirmed and enriched the perspective that I have on my art\/land practice, to which all fuel collected\u00a0from the residency\u00a0will undoubtedly be added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The residency was\u00a0an opportunity to slow down, and settle into a creative rhythm where rest, reflection, receptivity, and intuition could be made daily priorities. The result was uninterrupted focus, channelled into\u00a0a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/emilyrosemichaud\/sets\/72157659808435470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interdisciplinary watershed studies<\/a>.\u00a0The energy invested\u00a0will flow into a solo show at the <a href=\"http:\/\/mvtm.ca\/mvtm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mississippi Valley Textile Museum<\/a> in\u00a0Almonte, Ontario in two years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I came to the\u00a0residency with a desire to communicate with\/about our human relationship to water. Specifically, to invest some\u00a0energy into\u00a0my own ties\u00a0with the essential element. This\u00a0took the\u00a0form of\u00a0research, creation and experimentation for the upcoming museum installation, which will\u00a0pay homage to the role the power and presence the water has had on the Rosamond Woollen Mill, the fleece industry, and its&rsquo; Irish settlers over the last century.\u00a0The water around the historic Rosamond Mill at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum site, as well as the Mississippi River Valley&rsquo;s watershed will be incorporated, and re-interpreted for the exhibition&rsquo;s interactive and immersive installations, (which will include mapping, drawing, time-lapse video and a series of educational and inspirational talks).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&rsquo;m looking forward to visiting\u00a0the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, its&rsquo; curator Michael Rikley-Lancaster and staff (where I&rsquo;m headed tomorrow), to check out the space and to discuss the ideas that are brewing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2932 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_2882-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2882\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_2882-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_2882-1024x721.jpg 1024w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/211;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The residency began mostly in\u00a0drawing: focused on a study of topographical maps of the Mississippi River Valley region. It then grew into an interdisciplinary series focused on the area&rsquo;s watershed. Serpentine, organ-like lines were repeated obsessively, and experiments ranged from\u00a0living seed\u00a0on tapestry, to paint and charcoal on paper, to collecting lake water and plunging\u00a0into an icy waterfall.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2940 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/meesha_em-165x300.jpg\" alt=\"meesha_em\" width=\"187\" height=\"340\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/meesha_em-165x300.jpg 165w, https:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/meesha_em.jpg 396w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 187px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 187\/340;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I became engaged in a dialogue with water on many levels. Over the course of the two weeks, the water\u00a0work gained\u00a0increasing form\u00a0from the inspired\u00a0conversations shared with co-residents K, Meesha, William and Natan. Rare books from the Star &amp; Snake&rsquo;s library were gleaned, as I absorbed various mythologies, folk customs, and stories about water, its&rsquo; creatures and deities throughout human history. So too, nestled into my brain thanks to\u00a0Google maps, was the data marking out\u00a0all the watery places I&rsquo;d travelled through and walked to: local brooks, creeks, dams, waterfalls, and lakes. I couldn&rsquo;t help but to dream it. It was around this point, that something shifted. My work took on a significance broader than any one specific place or group of people. A universal relationship to water had been established, seemingly outside of time, free of language, anchored\u00a0by ancient line and form, remembered through sound and season. Water had begun to inhabit me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2928 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSCN6938-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN6938\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSCN6938-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emilyrosemichaud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSCN6938-1024x542.jpg 1024w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/159;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The drawings, map studies and repetition of lines as\u00a0two-dimensional works not only reinforced the impression of the waterscapes within my psyche and upon the paper, but demonstrated the\u00a0parallels that water bodies have to human constellations \u2014 the social connections tracing us to our collective\/respective watersheds, and\u00a0situating our bodies within the larger schema of water in the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe data-src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/142710133?title=0&amp;amp;byline=0\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/142710133\">Watershed, I<\/a>, a\u00a0time-lapse movie\u00a0of a human-scale, living tapestry, documenting seeds growing into a river, upon burlap. This was watered daily from the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. A beginning process, creating something from nothing. I had been reflecting on the role of chaos in life from a book of essays by Hakim Bey: \u00ab\u00a0Both as ancient myth and as &lsquo;new science&rsquo;, chaos lies at the heart of our project. [&#8230;] Before all kings, priests, agents of Order, History, Hierarchy, Law. &lsquo;Nothing&rsquo; begins to take on a face\u00a0\u2014 the smooth, featureless egg or gourd, chaos as becoming, chaos-as-excess, the generous outpouring of nothing into something. In effect, chaos is life. All mess, all riot of colour, all protoplasmic urgency, all movement\u00a0\u2014 is chaos. Thanks to water, the seeds\u00a0awaken with a force of their own and unleash a momentum that I cannot entirely control. The work is bigger than me. Born from almost nothing, they become powerful, messy, alive. I have set into motion a creative energy that I&rsquo;m forced to keep up with. Fellow resident William Kiesel describes the circle as a \u00ab\u00a0symbol of the totality of existence\u00a0[&#8230;] The circle also implies the center and thus the idea of radiating outward or expansion\u00a0\u00bb, including its&rsquo; ability to \u00ab\u00a0exhibit qualities related to navigation and orientation.\u00a0\u00bb He goes on to say that the circle \u00ab\u00a0in and of itself implies eternity, without beginning or end, whereas the square delineates the divisions of the quadrants into the well known directions East, West, North and South.\u00a0\u00bb &#8211; W. I follow the media that suits my expression, navigating between installation, land art, time-based media, drawing or writing \u2014 a\u00a0final object is rarely emphasized, while a series of encounters is. Encounters that cultivate relationship and dialogue between art, audience, environment and artist. A place where co-authourship\u00a0over\u00a0sole authourship is favoured, where the work, creator\u00a0and participant are intertwined, and where creative agency\u00a0is shared as much as possible. I would like for the result of my work to open a broader\u00a0cultural dialogue, provoking action and gathering people around the subject of our relationship to the natural world and the territories that surround us. Much of my work is about getting to know our surroundings, including the places and the human histories that we are inextricably a part of (belong to, owe our lives to). The translation of technical, topographical tracings evolved to freestyle colour, and each\u00a0process helped me to understand the landscape around the Mississippi River Valley watershed, as well as grasp the\u00a0degree to which the bodies of H2O are interconnected. Like humans. He talked about how seeds grow and how they don&rsquo;t preserve well unless you keep growing them. Keeping them in the bank is not always the most viable solution. Perspectives from peasant life and Indigenous societies emphasize the spiritual value\u00a0of living in\u00a0direct connection to these elements. Through experience, and in listening to the information that comes through the soles of our feet, the palms of our hands, and the seat of our pants, we gain strength and perspective on our role\u00a0in the world.
