Fort Village brings together four artists to examine the construction and interpretation of the fort from different perspectives, each activating property and land in their own way. Traditionally, the forts of military posts connote attack and defense, whereas for our community-based art experiment, the forts have become strongholds and places for people to gather, as safe hideouts and to facilitate new encounters within a public setting. Within each fort, a portable radio will be installed, used to broadcast the pirate radio program that will be airing that weekend, put together with the help of dozens of community members. People are invited to visit the forts, play in them, tune in and listen to the live broadcasts happening throughout the weekend of Wakefest. >> Scroll down for a detailed description of the forts that will make up this unique installation.

FORT VILLAGE is curated by Emily Rose Michaud and the fort installations are made by herself, Jamie Munro, Lachlan Lepine, Elizabeth Logue and the community.

http://wakefest.org/
http://emilyrosemichaud.com/

++++++++++++++

VILLAGE FORTIFIÉ – du 22 au 26 août, Wakefest 2013. Summoning, foraging and collecting all played a role in the construction of this fort: Cedar posts from a nearby swamp; local flora, dried and preserved; various elements distilled into a hideout as place of reflection. Assembled for anyone curious enough to enter or yearning enough to retreat. Fortified by the possibility of encounter between human and non-human species. Fed by a pause, while remembering to listen.

Emily is an artist and organizer based in Montréal and Wakefield. Her recent works include a self-published ‘zine featuring DIY approaches to art and action, as well as a series of on-growing performances and site-specific works that activate land in both urban and rural settings. http://emilyrosemichaud.com/.

No Way In – Jamie Munro

Jamie’s visual arts background has been augmented by set design and construction. This aspect of his work will be the basis of his “fort”. His fort asks the questions; Who is the enemy? Where are the boundaries of safety?. « I enjoy the Wakefest installation experience as it is an opportunity to play with concepts in concrete ways ».

As a visual artist, Jamie has been exploring the beauty of nature and the sublime state brought forth by observation. Patterns, music, calligraphy and architecture are some of his influences.

Static Silence Disrupted – Lachlan Lepine

Static Silence Disrupted: A Cosmic Broadcast etches a place in Time. Travels in Africa, England and Canada contribute to the development of his work. Lachlan is excited to further push the boundaries of architecture having recently graduated from Dalhousie’s Environmental Design Studies program.

Wakefest Arts Festival Creation – Elizabeth Logue

Visit a Lego Fort … Find a mound of communa-LEGO pieces and build, re-build, re-construct … play … contemplate … Leave with a different view of space around you and a different sense of place.
