STREET ART 101: DRAWING + PROJECTS FOR PUBLIC SPACES – beginners (Ages 9-12). ART URBAIN 101: DESSIN + PROJETS POUR ESPACES PUBLICS – débutants (9 à 12 ans).
This course will introduce the street art basics to burgeoning young artists with a desire to reach an audience beyond the gallery walls. How can classroom creations fit into public space and transform the everyday environment? Walking tours around the Orleans campus will inspire students to think about urban space differently. We will observe the signs, signals and stories of the street to inspire our temporary drawings and installations. We will begin with drawing and sculpture, then move on to stencil, sticker art, wheatpasting and street poster art, mosaic tiling, murals, street installations, woodblocking and yarn bombing as we emerge from the gallery and immerse ourselves in the life of the street. How might we transform our drawings for everyday use; how do we create commissions for public art projects; how might store owners and street artists build a community; which are the parameters to follow as a professional street artist. All of these questions and more will be discussed in this lively course. Open to beginner/intermediate levels.
Saturday, July 18th, 9am – 4pm (@ Orleans Campus)
INTRO to NATURAL PIGMENTS – for beginners (adults). INTRODUCTION aux PIGMENTS NATURELS – pour débutants (adults)
Creating our own paint and pigment is not only fun; it helps us reconnect to the materials we use to make art, while minimizing toxic exposure. During the workshop, we will explore the basic elements of paint (including binders and pigments), cover aspects of history, chemistry and affordability. This one day workshop will highlight recipes for gesso, tempera, watercolour and gouache. Deepen your knowledge of paint mediums and experiment with recuperated surfaces upon which to paint. Understand the processes and advantages related to the creation of your own colours, while honing your improvisational skills. Participants will embark upon a collective art piece with recuperated materials. An information booklet with recipes and resources will be provided. Material kits will be sold at the beginning of the workshop (maximum cost of 25$)
